When Should I Visit a Dermatologist?
Dermatologists are medical doctors who are experts in the medical and surgical treatment of the skin. Many people choose to see a dermatologist because they are concerned about a mole or growth, because they have acne or rosacea that makes them self-conscious, or because they suffer from an uncomfortable rash. Increasingly, women and men are also choosing to see a dermatologist in order to age more gracefully.
Canadian-trained dermatologists must complete a minimum of three years of undergraduate education, four years of medical school, and five years of rigorous post-graduate residency training in dermatology. They must also successfully complete the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certifying examination in dermatology in order to become Fellows of the Royal College.
Dermatologists pioneered the use of wrinkle-relaxers, fillers and lasers in skin rejuvenation, and they continue to study and improve these modalities. They also diagnose and treat most cases of skin cancer in North America and frequently manage complicated and severe skin diseases. In Canada, there are currently approximately 560 dermatologists in active practice. These skin specialists serve our population of 35 million people.
